Who is still here

Tenure on the team against tenure in the company, what a departure removes, and why a team of experienced people can be four months old.

four people · 6 possible pairs · 3 of them have worked on something together · 1 has only been in the same meeting · 2 have never done either

Four of the eight, and only the pairs that run between those four.

The team that resets every nine months

If the median member has been on a team for nine months, the team has no institutional memory beyond that, however long the company has existed.

Tenure on the team against tenure here

Two numbers per person, one of them usually much smaller. Reading them together is the cheapest way to see how old a team actually is.

What leaves when one person leaves

A departure removes one person from the headcount and every pair they were in from the network. On a hub-shaped team those are not comparable losses.

The third product manager in a year

A role that turns over repeatedly costs more than the sum of the departures, because each arrival restarts a relationship that never gets past its beginning.

Joining a team that has no pairs

Arriving into a sparse network is a different experience from arriving into a dense one, and almost all onboarding advice assumes the dense case.

The person nobody has worked with yet

An empty row on the grid is the most actionable thing on it and the hardest to notice, because the person in it is usually doing fine.

Part-time members and borrowed people

A designer shared across three teams is on three grids and belongs to none of them. How to count somebody whose attention is divided, and what they need instead.

When a team is younger than it looks

A group of experienced people can be a four-month-old team. The figure that tells you which, and the three decisions it should change.
